Sibylla Shekerdjiska-Benatova is a young artist, currently living
and working in Philadlephia, USA. Sibylla graduated from the Bulgarian
Theater and Film Academy in 1999. She majored in puppet stage
design under Professor Maya Petrova. She has participated in exhibitions
in Bulgaria, her work was reproduced in the Calendar of Jewish
Bulgarian artists. She has illustrated several books of poetry
as well as Yordan Radichkov’s collection of stories Pupavo vreme.
She works as a paper conservator in Philadelphia. Dealing with
old books and manuscripts is a great inspiration for her interest
in hand-made paper in its natural colors. What intrigues her the
most is the paper’s behavior under extreme conditions. Her exhibition,
opening on March 11, will be presenting her vision of New York
City as well as landscapes of Bulgarian mountains, Rhodope rugs,
and village fences.
